Madisons: Modern Australian Cuisine with a flair

If you used to call Melbourne (or any part of Australia, for that matter) home, you will find comfort at Madisons. Or, if you just want to have a taste of good honest Modern Australian fare without forking out a small fortune for the air ticket, this is where you should go. Located amidst several other western restaurants on Jalan Bangkung, Bangsar, Madisons stands out easily with its informal setting yet sophisticated food. One of those well-kept secrets in Kuala Lumpur.

Run by a Husband/Wife team, Madisons is named after their daughter, and is Chef Kelly Delaney’s (that’s right, the wife is the chef) dream come true after her several stints at some of the finest restaurants in Australia, including award winning “Auge” in Adelaide as well as iconic beach side Melbourne restaurant “Stokehouse”.

The restaurant interior is modern and tastefully decorated with wooden furniture, timber panels and menu displays on blackboards. The large bar counter is inviting and suitable for singles, and the sofa area outside makes for a cosy coffee hangout.

Madisons offers very attractive lunch and weekend brunch set menus featuring Chef Kelly’s signature dishes. A 3-course lunch set will only set you back about RM40++, almost too good to be true, if underpriced. But if you have a bigger appetite, you could forego the sets and order the full size dishes, also priced reasonably. Here the food is prepared with fresh local ingredients (and some imported from Australia, of course) sourced by the Chef herself. Chef Kelly loves experimenting with new things, which sees the restaurant changing its menu every few months. Each dish is carefully crafted with play on texture, colours and matching flavours and it works superbly and brilliantly.

The gastronomic experience started with this impressive dish of Butter Poached Asparagus, Sous-Vide Egg, Sultana and Shaved Almond Panna Grattato, Truffle Honey. Elegantly presented with a tantalizing wobbly egg yolk, this dish is sophisticated with clean flavours. Lovely textural play here with the silky smooth egg yolk and the crunch of the asparagus and almond. Watch the egg yolk flow over the asparagus and sigh with pleasure.

The Carpaccio of pickled beetroot, wild baby rocket, toasted shaved almond, goat’s cheese presents itself in vibrant colour too. Goat’s cheese and beetroot is a match made in heaven, and Chef Kelly takes it up a notch by adding almonds and peppery baby rocket. This will make any vegetarian happy.

Meat lovers should opt for the Chartruterie Board with 3 different cuts of cured meats, house made liver pate, chutney and toasts. Each slices of meat is very thinly sliced and packed with flavours, the pate and chutney are a joy to eat with the crispy toasts.

Market fish, Parsnip Puree, French sausage, Beetroot Chips is definitely Chef Kelly’s signature dish. Visually appealing, the vibrant beetroot appears once again in the deep fried form and it’s dangerously addictive. The sea bass was cooked perfectly too, with nicely crisp skin and sweet juicy flesh. Using parsnip mash is a healthier alternative to starchy potato mash and this version is smooth, creamy and comforting. It’s no wonder it’s a crowd favourite. In fact many would return for this dish, that’s why it will never come off the menu (much to my relief).

Madisons’ Saturday and Sunday brunch menu also includes a Spanish omelette filled with goodness of vegetables, made slightly naughty with generous sprinkle of cheese melted over the top. A simple and straight forward dish, yet nutritious and satisfying.

Desserts at Madisons are excellent and with the set menu you get a selection of mini desserts to complete your meal. Lemon Meringue Pie is highly recommended with tangy lemon curd and pillowy soft meringue. While the homemade cheesecake is delightful; the Madisons descontructed tiramisu is definitely the star of the show with a rich and velvety chocolate mousse, and coffee mascarpone.

This is a restaurant worth revisiting, and no doubt I will be checking out their new menu in January. This place is truly a gem and worthy of a visit if you haven’t been. Simply awesome and outstanding.

Madisons 2-course lunch is priced at RM35++ and 3-course lunch at RM40++. The set lunch is available from Mon-Fri, but they also do a 3-course weekend brunch at RM40++ (11am-4pm).
