Kar Heong Restaurant and Few Announcements etc.

Firstly, I’d like to draw your attention to a local movie which has just opened over the weekend: Kepong Gangster 《甲洞》 (click on link to find out what the movie is all about). Several months ago I was invited to play an extra on the movie. It was a mere 20 seconds or so footage, but still nonetheless very exciting for me. So if you plan to watch it, do watch out for the couple at the Bak Kwa stall. I probably look fat though, I heard the widescreen is not very kind to the waistline!

Secondly, I’ve finally joined the Malaysia’s Hottest Bloggers‘ community. Last Saturday was their 2nd Anniversary and the party (held at Ecoba, sponsored by Carlberg) was a blast! It’s probably one of the few parties I’ve been to where there are more girls than the dudes. It’s always fun to meet new people and I’m looking forward to the next event. :)

Thank you Carlberg for the Party!

Phew! Last weekend sure went past like a whirlwind. My band played at the Sepang International Cirtcuit Paddock for the Posrche Carrera Cup Asia’s Hospitality Party on Friday night. Although the party doesn’t start until 7:30pm, we were since at 2:30pm for our setup and sound check. And boy was it a long day! After the setup and some wandering around (for the boys… they got distracted by all these race cars), we decided to drive back to Subang for late lunch/early dinner).

We were brought to Kar Heong Restaurant for the Ipoh Style Chicken Rice by our bassist who’s a Subang local. Quite fitting too considering I’ve just done a post on Tau Huay and Chicken Rice is another ‘white food’ that was mentioned in the Diner en Blanc fiasco. Sure enough, it’s quite hawker and not something you’d commonly see in a 5 star restaurant (apart from Chatterbox in Mandarin Oriental Singapore), but nevertheless a comforting dish that’s close to many hearts.

Anyway, back to Kar Heong Restaurnat: The outside of restaurant was unimpressive but surprisingly it already quite busy at 5pm. There were newspapers and magazine cutouts plastered all over the wall. All good signs. The service was efficient and food arrives within minutes. Even better!

Quarter “White” Chicken and Quarter Roast Chicken

I’ve always been fond of Chicken Rice and I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of it. The Chicken was smooth and extremely silky. Goes well with the umami soy sauce and sesame oil. Almost melts in the mouth. Perfection. I didn’t touch the Roast Chicken though it went empty pretty quickly. The chili sauce is really good here, with a strong kick and the strong garlicky fragrance. Best thing is they come in a tub and you can take as much as you like. The rice erred on the dry side, maybe they are trying to be health conscious and use less chicken fat to cook it. Not a huge issue.

Ipoh Style Tau Geh (Bean Sprouts)

For only RM4.00, you get a huge plate of fat bean sprouts. You really don’t have to do much to such good quality produce, and they do this dish well. Crunchy (both the bean sprouts and fried shallots), well seasoned and aromatic. Provides the textural difference needed in this meal.

Pork Balls and Prawns Wantans

They are also quite famous for their pork balls so we’ve ordered some with wantans. Nothing to complain about. I’d happily finish the whole bowl if it wasn’t for the lack of stomach space. The boys had second helping of rice! I think I’m surrounding by eating machines.

The New Porsche…. I want to take it home.

And Allan Wu, another emcee.

And that almost concluded my awesome weekend – missing the epic banana leaf lunch and boozy mojito afternoon… Have I mentioned that I’m surrounded by eating machines?

How was your weekend, my dear readers?

  1. I want the chicken, the ipoh beansprouts and the wontons and pork balls!!!! Made the wontons over weekend but can’t ever get enough of them and noodle soups hahaha

  2. My long weekend was full of food and coffee, I had 4 cups yesterday. :P

  3. That looks like a serious mountain of bean sprouts. And it looks like you had a better weekend than I did. Images are very good.

  4. Love the pork balls at Kar Heong. They kinda shrunk over the years but still taste good.

Aaaarg…missed you at Sepang during the MME. I was there somewhere at the rooftop during the sound check.

  5. Kelly, you look fantastic in those pictures! You remind me of Leighton Meester!

  6. so many activities going on and still you can cook so much! you look fantastic !!

    • Actually I didn’t do any cooking last weekend at all! Was eating out (and too excess too). I actually think that cooking at home saves more time than heading out to eat. (Need to put on decent clothes, drive/take a cab, pick a place to go, wait to order, and wait for them to cook… all time consuming also)

  7. Soooo pretty ;) Great work ~ woo hoo!
